Mulligan Concept

The Mulligan concept uses specific therapist-applied mobilizations with movement in the extremities and spine to restore normal, pain-free motion. The concept uses the physical therapist-applied force to correct what Mulligan describes as positional faults in the joints that prevent normal joint motion and lead to the presence of pain. This approach is another concept originating from New Zealand and melds well into the McKenzie Methods classification system.

Conditions the Mulligan Concept May Help

  • Pain of a non-inflammatory nature
  • Acute pain from injury
  • Loss of motion due to arthritic conditions
  • Post surgical conditions causing loss of pain free movement, e.g. post scope conditions, spinal surgery
  • Headaches due to neck problems
  • Dizziness associated with neck problems
  • Jaw or TMJ pain and movement restrictions
  • Acute to chronic ankle sprains
  • “Tennis elbow” or lateral elbow pain
